REQUIREMENT FOR membership

1. Registration fee 300
2. Copy of national ID
3. Copy of KRA pin certificate
4. Registration certificate and constitution for government registered groups
5. Endorsement letters for Catholic church groups from the patron
6. Next of kin/beneficiaries details(marriage certificate/affidavit/copy of Id/birth certificate)
7. Trustee Id where minors are beneficiaries

1. Individual accounts

A person who is 18 years and above shall be eligible for membership provided that he/she is of acceptable social and moral standards.
In order for an applicant to join a self-help group the applicant must complete membership documents under (Appendix 2), agree to maintain savings in the self-help group and pay any applicable fee
An applicant shall be admitted for membership on being accepted by a majority vote of the Management Committee.
He/she shall nominate in writing a person or persons who in case of death, incapacity or insanity, shall inherit or take over the savings, interests and liabilities owned by him/her.

2. Corporate Accounts

Corporate membership shall be allowed for the church, religious groups and other registered groups as prescribed below;

Catholic Church.
Catholic Church groups registered and recognized in the parish.
Government registered groups.
Guarantorship groups.

Provided that:

Where the Catholic Church applies for membership, a duly filled application form shall be submitted together with minutes of the Parish Pastoral Council authorizing the opening of the account and a list of three signatories including the parish priest.
Where a Catholic Church Group applies for membership, a duly filled application form shall be submitted together with minutes of the group authorizing the opening of the account and a list of three signatories plus the parish priest.
Where a government registered group and/or entity applies for membership, a duly filled application form shall be submitted together with minutes of the group authorizing the opening of the account and a list of three signatories. A registration certificate with any government agency has to be produced on application together with the group's constitution.
The government registered groups will be required to renew their certificate on expiration for their membership to remain active.
Where a guarantorship group applies for membership. 80% of the members must be registered with that self-help group while 20% of the members who are eligible for membership may be recruited externally

3. Minor Saving Account

An account shall be opened on behalf of a minor and operated by a parent or guardian of 18 years and above on the following conditions and as per (Appendix 4);

The guardian or parent shall be a member for a minor account to be opened.
This shall be a pure savings account.
The account shall be exempted from all charges including benevolent fund.
It shall be entitled to distributable surplus.
The account shall not be used to take a loan. However, it may be used to guarantee a loan of the parent or guardian taken for the purpose of school fees or hospital bills for the minor only.
Having a minor account shall not grant the holder an extra vote.
The guardian/parent shall be the de facto next of kin to this account.
The guardian or parent will be consulted and will declare in writing about reverting the funds to the minor when he/she attains the age of 18 years. The minor will have to apply as a member to retain the funds in the self-help group.

Privileges of members

Privileges of an active member:

Save regularly with convenience and safety.
Obtain loan for beneficial purposes.
Benefit from distributable surplus.
Entitled to the benevolent fund.
Right to information and confidentiality.
Right to retain membership in case of change of residence.
Right to one vote during meetings.

Loss of Privileges of a Member

A member shall lose privileges upon:

Being declared dormant.
Being declared a defaulter.
Withdrawal of shares.
Being expelled from membership.
Being declared bankrupt by a court of law.
Being medically declared of unsound mind or permanent incapacitation.

Loss of Membership

Withdrawal of membership.
When a member's loan is offset.
Expulsion from the group.
Death.

Withdrawal of Membership

An individual member may at any time withdraw from the group by giving a written notice of not less than sixty (60) days within which their financial position in the group will be reviewed and their shares shall be refunded within seven (7) days after the expiry of the notice.
Corporate groups can withdraw their membership after presenting minutes of a meeting that approved the withdrawal; as per their constitution.
A membership withdrawal form shall be used for all withdrawals as per Appendix 5.

Expulsion from Membership

A member may be expelled from the group by the management under the following circumstances:

Where a member is involved in fraud against the group.
Where a member commits gross misconduct as prescribed in the Governance Manual.
Where a member says or acts in a manner that threatens the interests of the group or other members.
Where a member is tried and convicted of a cognizable criminal offence.
Where members are involved in activities which are against Catholic social teachings.

A member who is expelled from a self-help group may appeal to Caritas Nairobi for redress.
